My Flex Seal Review
As some of you know, I fancy myself a bit of a handyman. My wife may disagree, but we’re all entitled to our opinions . So anyway, one of the things I love to do is try out new tools and products. Recently I kept seeing commercials for this product called Flex Seal, so I thought I’d order some and put it through it’s paces with a Flex Seal Review.
We’ve all seen the crazy commercials
In the commercial, they cut the bottom out of a boat and install a screen door which they then spray with Flex Seal in order to demonstrate how well it works. Sorry folks, I’m just not that dedicated (or crazy). By the way, for those who have seen the commercial, isn’t that guy a terrible Billy Mays imitation? Anyway, I digress. For my test, I picked a much simpler (and cheaper) test.
This May be Why My Wife Questions My Handyman Status
Last year, I installed a gas fireplace in our sunroom. I vented it with a stovepipe through the roof. Well, all was great until we had our first thaw last winter. Drip drip drip came the water leaking through. I figured this scenario would make a great test for Flex Seal.

Flex Seal to the Rescue?
Flex Seal calls itself “Handyman in a Can” and “Liquid Rubber”. It claims to seep into cracks and holes, and dry to a watertight, flexible rubberized coating. You can also paint over it once dry and apply it to wet surfaces. Flex Seal supposedly can be used on just about any surface, won’t crack, peal or sag and becomes stronger over time.
They say it is perfect for:
Roofs
Gutters
Pipes
Skylights
Plastic
Wood
Metal
PVC
& More
We’ll see.
Anyway, back to my leak. I THOUGHT I had flashed the pipe properly, it looked like I had, but water has a way of finding it’s way into the smallest little gaps. So with my “Handyman in a Can” in hand, up to the roof I headed.
The Bottom Line
After my success with the first project, I tried Flex Seal on a few other applications. I had aleaky garden hose that Flex Seal tackled with no problems. It even stopped the leak on my wife’s beloved metal watering can (it was her mother’s) I actually got a hug for that one! I 
also tried it on the hose coupler of my power washer. It did not work on that. I don’t know if it was because of the pressure or what, but the instructions do say it should not be used under “extreme pressure” so that was probably it. Also, it should be noted that there are some other applications that the manufacturer says are not appropriate including Gas Tanks or anything Designed to Hold Combustibles, Anything Holding Water or Liquid for Human or Animal Consumption, and Tires or Anything Under “Extreme Pressure”
One can of Flex Seal will treat about 9-13sq feet.

Update
Just a quick update on my Flex Seal Projects. The sunroom is still bone dry, even after the cold wet spring we had. The old garden hose is still leak free, although I did have to apply a second coat. I think that’s because the hose is flexible and gets moved around so much. Most importantly, my wife’s beloved Watering Can is still with nary a leak! Flex Seal really is a great product. Of course it probably won’t do some of the crazy things you see on TV, but when is the last time you needed to install a screen door in a rowboat?
